My FCS3 install spans 7 DVDs and weighs in around 50gb. FCPX as a stand alone app will be ~300mb, but they'll have to offer it on physical media if they plan on including all the extras that ship with the current suite. I'm sure it'll be $999 full, or $299 upgrade for the full studio. At least I hope so. Here I stand, cash in hand!

I really can't wait to see what happens with Logic.

It's bad enough that the suite will be updated every year (.5 edition) and now the subscription too?

Am I understanding correctly: no updates for the mid-term suite for those that plunge for the more expensive bi-annual package? Boo.

I feel bad for all the designers/photographers/filmmakers (part of companys and esp. freelance/new graduates). How the hell will folks be able to afford upgrading every year and/or two years. This doesn't include the time and possible addition outlay to work around the learning curves for all new bells, whistles, bs etc.

I guess I stopped using Adobe's product at the right time. This just makes my wallet and brain cringe massively.

We heard something really similar to that when every other company released video-playing mp3 players before Apple did, and Jobs said he didn't see anybody wanting to have portable video. Well, Apple bit its tongue and released it, calling it "innovation".

I'm a big iPod fan (i've purchased 3) but wireless capabilities is the way of the future. I don't see ourselves in 10 years still being limited by wired headphones and such. Maybe it'll be easier than the Zune (haven't seen the demo) but the idea of beaming a song for somebody else to download/hear is pretty cool to me.
Bear in mind, Jobs is making fun of wireless capacities today. Apple probably waited for the right time to release the "video" iPod (IMHO they could've waited for at least 640x480), so it's not as bad as you describe it.

But you are right. Most who dismiss an entire catalog based on the year are not really listening. Any bass player alive today needs to study Paul McCartney (and many others too). Paul really did open up what a bass player can play.

Honestly, most musicians don't study the Beatles as individuals - nor do they need to - because they were just solid musicians, nothing spectacular. When you had Clapton, Beck, and even Townshend, there is no need to study Lennon or Harrison. When you had Entwistle ... no need for McCartney.

... and that putting aside the fact that in the mid 60's the level of musicianship exhibited by even average jazz players was far above anything rock players seen as 'innovators' were doing ...

Ok, good questions and thoughts. Let me explain/expound upon my statement. The bolded part below seems to be what is drawing the most reaction.

without an accurate understanding of who God is and our relationship to him these good works become nothing but acts of vanity and self glorification that serve only to advance pride and promote self-reliance.

I am not speaking about conscious motivation within an individuals actions/behavior, although that could be true as we all know people do at times act out of selfish and prideful intentions. You are not necessarily talking about motivation which is either conscious or unconscious. The objection to this idea of man - and other species, too - being altruistic without a licence from El is highly objectionable itself. Is it that you do not want to allow independent action? Where then is free will? Where are other faiths? Does the giving of alms by Muslims count for nothing, too?

Much faster. Even the 7300GT is significantly better.

Anyway, of the two NEW edition to the lineup, the 17" GMA iMac is much more important to Apple's well being. Why? Volume. They're going to sell ten of them for every 24". The 24" is a silver bullet machine. It's really cool looking, but I don't see many plunking down $2000 on a family computer. It's not going to really appeal to professionals or prosumers either because of its feature set.So you think the $999 model will be a home run? What about all those extras you get for only $200 more? Seems to me the $999 model just gets them into the store where a sales person sells them on the upgrade to the $1199 model.

On the top, I have to say that you will be so much better off with a 3GB - third party ram - 2GHz Mac Pro and a Dell 24" screen for a total of about $3k. And if you have a screen already, then it's even more of a no brainer to buy the 2GHz Mac Pro. My slant.

Hopefully that something invovles isight/front row displays that are more reasonable in price.

    Agreed. Dream prices:

    20"= $450
    24"=$600
    30"=$1000

They could always fill the $2k dispay spot with a 50", HDTV Capable display that supported 20 million pixles :D

This could be cool but I am amazed how many people say it's too hard to connect to iTunes for a back up. Last night I got home from work, plugged in my iPhone to install the update then took a shower. When I was done with my shower and stuff it was all done.

My local Best Buy as of 11:15 this morning(The Woodlands, Texas) did not have any iPad 2's available. I failed to ask them if they were already sold out for the day or if they just didn't have them in stock. Regardless, no luck there.

The Beatles are up there with the likes if Bach as far as helping to shape the future of musical style and sound. If you don't know who Bach is then I feel sorry for you.I know perfectly well who Bach is (and, in fact, who Bach were) and comparing him with the Beatles is musical stupidity at his best.

If my dad happened to have met John Lennon in Liverpool, he could have been in the Beatles too. Overhyped experimental infants who gave the world a little over five decent songs.

    So has Madonna.

I hope what this shows the PC makers is that it's not just a race to the bottom as far as price is concerned, but that people are willing to pay more for a device if it's built well and does a good job.

Stop worrying about shaving that extra dollar off the price and providing the rock-bottom rickety low-cost PC that will fall apart in a few months; instead, go ahead and invest in computers with longer battery life, better build quality, and other useful features -- consumers are willing to pay for it.

There's zero incentive for Apple to do that. They're in the business of making $$. If they made a phone, and supported it for 5 - 7 years, no one would buy new ones, therefore no revenue. It's all about making cash...

Plus, a phone going on 3 plus years is pretty good. You got you money's worth. Sell it on E Bay-or Craigslist, and make some cash. Or like you said, an iPod.

Please bear in mind that Apple were still selling the iPhone 3G in May last year, less than a year ago!

I'm sure you're correct but I'm confused as to what results to believe.

I'm now using istat Pro, Temperature Monitor and Core2Duotemp. All are saying the same thing.

    See the screen grab below.

If I put the machine under stress it does go up to 50 or 60 degrees but generally, it's saying around 21 when idle.

Mine used to get stuck at low temperatures like that. It's a glitch in the CPU's measuring stuff.

Download the latest version of smcFanControl. It has a temperature reading, but uses a sensor on the logic board rather than the one on/in the CPU. I get a more accurate temperature now. With my minimum fan speed at 2500rpm, I get idle of around 46C. and gets up to about 77/78C when pushed, but of the course the fan kicks in then and keeps it in check.

I'm also curious about some people likening the fan in the MB to a jet engine. As mine spins up, i can hear a faint whine that sounds a bit like a jet engine, but as it gets faster, all I hear is the 'woosh' of air.

Anyone knows if the mac pro allows us to upgrade to PCI graphics cards bought from retail stores? Will there be any driver issues? Do graphics card vendors include Mac drivers on their installation disc? Never seen one that does though..
    Thx for answering.

my thoughts about the Banner: There are no new products on this banner (ok, the DVD) only products wich we already know.

    Power Mac/ Mac Pro
    iMac
    Macbook /(Pro)
    iPod Nano

thats all i can see. so you will see, that there is no "normal" iPod on the picture. Why the hell ist that? Are they going to release a new one?
I realy don't belive in this, but it seems strange to me, that theree are all hardware products on the banner with only the iPod missing......

Well, I like to listen to music on an MP3 player. Windows does not natively support MP3. I don't like product activation, as it means I have to call and reactivate when I change a bunch of hardware, which I'm likely to do enough for it to be a problem. I don't like paying for an OS with an insecure foundation. I don't like paying for an OS which with IE 'removed' still manages to pop up ads in ... IE. I don't like a dos cli, which has some UNIX commands, but ususally requires DOS commands.
Uh. Windows does have the support. I can play MP3s in Windows Media Player. I can write programs using the API to play MP3s, WMA, ASF, whatever. Maybe you mean to encode? Sure, Microsoft didn't want to pay Fraunhofer for the license, since they have their own audio format that works just fine.

Product activation. Just sends info on computer--no personal info. One click. No big deal. Microsoft is just protecting its profits losses. I've had my Athlon for a year, changed a lot, XP still runs fine and hasn't bitched.

Windows is just as insecure as any desktop OS. I've seen many OS X security updates. Desktop OSes are worst for security if you don't know how to fully utilize the OS security components (i.e. NT Security Model, UNIX security model).

If you want UNIX in Windows. Get cygwin.

.net is an entirely closed initiative. JScript is JavaScript crippled for IE only. C# is (from what I've heard) bad C++. I have tried to avoid .net for many reasons. I enjoy open standards. I like learning languages which are more likely to succeed in the broadest audience. I hate the whole .dll structure. COM/ASP services I have built in the past refused to scale well.

Outside of that, I see nothing wrong with .net, and some people will surely code for it, as long as its around.
Very wrong. Microsoft has a shared-source (other name for open source) .NET VM, compiler, etc. for BSD called ROTOR. It's just as good as the commercial counterpart for Windows, which is free. Hell, ROTOR works on Windows if you want to have ROTOR on Windows. Besides, Mono is GPL'ed open source implementation of Microsoft.NET.

JScript is not only for IE. It's used in scripting. JScript.NET isn't for IE anyways. It's a scripting language that can be compiled into .NET MSIL CLR.

C# is a ECMA standard. Java isn't. It isn't bad C++. It isn't even C++. It's Microsoft's version of SUN's Java with quite some differences from Java. C# isn't Java per se, but very similar. C# is actually a very elegant language. It just works.

Microsoft also encourages standards with XML Web Services. It's an open standard. There's a XML Web Service implementation for Java by SUN. It will play friendly with Microsoft.NET.

COM/ASP scalability is just as bad as PHP scalability. Microsoft.NET solves this with ASP.NET which is far much more powerful and scalable.
No what I'm saying is that Apple is a company that invest heavily in its industrial design, its UI development, etc. which gives it a high degree of style.
No arguments there. Then again, Microsoft has too, especially with Microsoft.NET.

The hardware of Apple's line, love it or hate it, is highly stylized. The OS has a lot more visual appeal, and more thoughful and intuitive layout. It's bloody UNIX my Granny sends me email from. Windows is available as delivered in Marshmellow or 98 Mode. It just looks bad...
Opinionated. I don't care if its bloody UNIX your granny sends emails from, she still doesn't know and therefore doesn't take full advantage of UNIX. Marshmellow? 98 Mode? Microsoft has dumped 9x and moved on with NT/2k/XP.

The ease of use argument is primarily focused opn productivity.

In Windows, when you empty the trash, an alert/confirmation box appears. You can then change focus to another window, burying the alert box, and freezing the OS, so you have to drill down through all the windows you have open to answer this alert before continuing.
Why not simply respond to the request of action immediately then move on. Since when would it freeze the OS? Never happened to me. You don't have to answer to continue. Windows NT/2k/XP uses protected memory, just like Mac OS X. In fact, Windows had it long before Mac OS X even came out the public.
Little annoying counter-intuitive time wasters abound.
Well... I haven't come across anything counter-intuitive or time wasting in XP. It's all opinonated.
I have both, I use both, I code on both, and I just feel from experience that the Mac is a better environment to code on. As I said, I'm not rendering, so the raw speed advantages of x86 are lost to the clunkiness of the UI.
Mac is better vs. PC again. Remember. PC isn't Windows. Besides, the faster speed can help by increasing productivity by making things seem extremely responsive.
My main machine is a DP867 with 2GB of RAM and a ATA133 RAID.

It is as responsive it can be.
Wow, you need that much to be productive under Mac OS X? Jeez.

Well, I run a Dual PIII 500 Server/occasional workstation with 1GB of PC100 Registered ECC Micron RAM, all name brand, unaltered stuff. It also runs only heavily tested commercial apps (no kazaa like crap).

It has a BSOD often enough to cause hair loss. Also, it has very destructive BSODs, meaning I get to use my 4 Win2k boot floppies...that's 3 hours of lost time.
Then you're doing something wrong. Try out Windows XP. Very destructive BSODs, like what? I've only had one about win32k.sys, but that was a memory corruption issue that I quickly solved. Windows XP is absolutely STABLE here.

This sucks. I was going to buy my ticket when I got home from work. By the time I got home, it was already sold out.

You and a few other thousand engineers. What hasn't been said is how many tickets were sold. I would be curious to see if Apple limited the amount of tickets the first round to get hype and "additional tickets" will go on sale later this week.
